Inspired by nature, light up alarm clocks stimulate your bodies natural response to the sun rising encouraging you to wake up through both light and sound. After all my research and as a chronic over-sleeper, I have personally found this style clock to be the best way to actually wake up on time.
#5. Lumie Body Clock Active 250
The Lumie Body Clock Active 250 wakes you naturally, with a sunrise that gradually brightens over intervals you choose. At the end of the day, there is a sunset feature to help you naturally unwind and be ready for bed. Enhance your sunrise simulation with a dawn chorus or a rooster wake-up call. Or, if you have trouble nodding off, there are ‘white noise’ and wave sounds to help lull you to sleep. Use the FM radio or choose between 6 different sound effects as an alarm to wake you. As well as providing you with dimmable bedside lighting. There is also a cool security option that turns the light on while you’re away.
#4. JBL Horizon
The JBL Horizon offers room-filling stereo sound with wireless Bluetooth streaming, dual fast charge USB ports, crisp LCD display and ambient light. It features two alarms, with a choice of original digital alarm tones, up to five radio presets and a battery backup to make sure you always wake up on time. Its compact design is suitable for placement almost anywhere and the bright LED back light provides a multi sensory wake up experience. Perfect for those who want a little more than the traditional alarm clock.
#3. BioBrite Sunrise
The BioBrite Sunrise is sleek looking and option packed. This clock packs a 60W light bulb under a glass globe that gathers in brightness in user set intervals to help wake you up. Featuring an FM radio and battery back up, you should have everything you would expect in a typical bedside clock. This unit can also do the opposite and has a timed dimmer to gently put you to sleep. It is a little clunky and the controls take some getting used to but this is overall a very solid system.
#2. Verilux Rise and Shine
The Verilux Rise and Shine provide a gentle and natural way to wake up. It features duel alarms with a selection of nature sounds or FM radio. It starts the wake up process about 20 minutes before your set time and goes through 20 brightness setting to gradually illuminate your room stimulating your bodies natural reaction to wake up in the morning. The Verilux has a few more options, a brighter light, and a better display than the previous clocks on this list earning it top marks. It lacks a battery back up which is annoying but it uses a full size 60W bulb which you can replace yourself. That’s a big plus for long term usability. The unit is about the size of a small desk lamp so make sure you have space for it.
#1. Philips HF3520 Wake-Up Light
I want to start out by saying that the Philips HF3520 Wake-Up Light is my all-time favorite alarm clock to date. After testing and trying clock after clock this is the one that landed permanently on my bed side table. Starting 20-40 minutes before your set alarm time, the natural light goes from a soft sunrise like red to a bright full morning white. Philips makes four or so versions of their Wake-Up Light, but the 3520 is the all in version and definitely worth the extra couple bucks for the battery back up, duel alarms, more natural red light feature, and the button free touch sensitive face. With this clock I went from a groggy, half-awake, need my coffee now, grouch to an actual honest-to-goodness morning person. That’s right, I became that which I hated and have never been happier. I highly recommend this clock to anyone who has trouble waking up in the morning.
